Ana Filipovic is an architect, spatial designer, and independent researcher based in Berlin. Her work focuses on spatial manifestations of power structures in society, and the collective imaginaries that emerge out of them. Her work, which spans art and architecture, as well as theory and practice, uses various media to critically assess built environments and the forces that shape them. The recurring issue of interest in her work is our relationship to the notions of private, public, and common property amid the contemporary condition of the commodification of everything, especially in the domain of collective housing. Since 2014 Ana has collaborated with Philipp Mecke on the range of architectural projects and spatial intervention, under the moniker If/Then. Their research-based design practice examines the spaces, materialities, and textures of the dominant forces at work, and creates the counter ones. Previously she was associated with several architectural practices in Belgrade, Brooklyn, Frankfurt, and Berlin. Since 2019, Ana has been a part of Soft Agency, a diasporic group of female architects, artists, curators, scholars, and writers working with spatial practices.Ana holds a diploma degree in architecture from Belgrade University. She obtained a master’s degree in Architecture and Critical Spatial Practice from Städelschule in Frankfurt, supported by a two-year DAAD scholarship. In 2018-’19 she was a fellow in Architecture at the Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart, and a recipient of 2021 Initial grant from Akademie der Künste, Berlin. Since 2019 she is a registered freelance architect in Berlin.
